Although the numbers on the diagram to the left link to information regarding specific brain regions, their position on the diagram does not correspond with these regions. This is because this diagram is an artistic representation of the brain that is not neuroanatomically correct.

This book is an introductory guide to the human brain and does not assume any prior knowledge about neuroscience.

It is intended for students studying chiropractic, medicine, medical imaging (medical radiography), neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, occupational therapy, osteopathy, physiotherapy (physical therapy), psychology, speech pathology (speech-language pathology), nursing and relevant health courses.

It will also be useful for educators teaching in those areas and for those conducting research or writing about the brain.

At the time of writing, Dr Kerry Baker was Honorary Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne, Australia. He has a background in immunohistochemistry of the human brain, and his most recent publications are the interactive web book, Anatomy Quizbook Volume 2 (2021) and the article, Twelve tips for optimising medical student retention of anatomy (2022).

Payal Singh is a postgraduate student in Public Health at Griffith University, Australia and has a qualification in Medical Technology from the University of Otago, New Zealand. She is also the author of the Introductory Colour Atlas of the Human Brain: Basic Structure and Function. This unpublished work was the inspiration for Baker and Singh’s Interactive Guide to the Human Brain, and the latter also features photographs from Payal Singh’s original book.

Nick Duggan provided the superb photographic images in this book.

Our greatest debt is to the physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, pathologists, physiologists, anatomists and neuroscientists who established the foundations of current neuroscientific knowledge. Some of these investigators are mentioned in Baker & Singh’s Interactive Guide to the Human Brain, ranging from Albert Adamkiewicz and Leopold Auerbach to Carl Wernicke and Carl Westphal. However, these researchers are only a small sample of the many scientists who have contributed to what we know about the human brain. Not mentioned by name are the thousands of investigators who used recent inventions, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to elucidate brain function.
